2015: The Year of <You Decide>
According to the Chinese Zodiac, 2015 is the Year of the Sheep (Goat), symbolizing peace, harmonious co-existence, and tranquility.
The United Nations has proclaimed 2015 to be the International Year of Light, bringing focus to the topic of light science and its applications.
2015 is the Year of the Sunflower according to the Home Garden Association because, well, they like sunflowers.
Some Apple marketers hired by Tim Cook believe 2015 will be the Year of the Apple Watch.
Peace, Light… and Sunflowers
Some of the predictions about 2015 are more believable than others. It’s hard to believe we’ll achieve harmonious co-existence. I’m pretty sure light will be important every day of the entire year and that we’ve hardly tapped its potential.
Sunflowers – well, they’re nice flowers, so I suppose it’s possible they could be the best this year. And as for the Apple Watch… are there really enough people with discretionary money who can actually see a screen no bigger than the back of their wrist?
Make 2015 Your Year Of…
One takeaway from this is that it’s OK for 2015 to be the year of different things to different people. Why not proclaim this to be the year of something special – for you? You don’t even need to tell anybody. And it doesn’t have to be that big of a deal… just something that helps you be a better person, leader, colleague, etc…
For example…
- The Year of Doing Things That Matter
- The Year of Being Present
- The Year of Kindness
- The Year of Clarity
- The Year of Big Moves
- The Year of Status Quo
- The Year of Innovation
- The Year of Health
- The Year of Enjoying Discomfort
- The Year of Balance
- The Year of Decisiveness
What Will 2015 Be For You?
These aren’t resolutions per se (that would be an instant turnoff), but more like themes or personal declarations that can guide how you prioritize and how you act. And you could compile a longer list than I just did. So do it.
Pick one theme that will make a difference to you or those for whom you care about. Tell the people around you and ask them to help you stay on track. Or, don’t tell anyone – and hold yourself accountable.
Individuals and organizations often do nothing to improve because there are so many options of what could be done. And to make things worse, there often isn’t a bad option on the list. The only bad option is the one that’s not on the list… doing nothing.
