The Worst Form of Inequality…
This quote is a great leadership message from Aristotle:
“The Worst Form of Inequality is to Try to Make Unequal Things Equal”
It helps us remember that leadership demands good judgment and the courage to make decisions based on their context and circumstances. Yet, we have been programmed to do just the opposite – to adopt rules and policies that ensure our responses are viewed as consistent… as fair… as equal.
Of course, organizations need some rules and policies, but they should be limited to those that are absolutely necessary. When rules and policies extend beyond what’s necessary, leadership accountability is diminished, true leaders are restricted, and decisions may be made for the wrong reasons.
Examine your organization’s rules and policies. Ask yourself why they exist. If the answer is ‘to keep us out of jail’, then keep them. If the answer is ‘because we would make bad decisions without them’, then develop better decision making capability among your leaders and get rid of the rule or policy.
