Early Warning Signs: An Alarming Topic!
When your home security alarm goes off, what is your assumption? Has the alarm tripped because of a malfunction? Did someone open a door or window by accident?
That’s usually the case, isn’t it? It hardly ever goes off because there is a real problem. So when the alarm trips, the only reason we pay attention is because we need to take action to make it stop.
What alarms do you have in place for your organization?
- Do you have reports that point out exceptions to your financials?
- Do you receive complaints from customers?
- Do you have someone who monitors industry trends?
Maybe the answer is yes, yes, and yes. But the question that comes next is the most important.
What do you do when the alarm goes off? If the answer is nothing, then you probably don’t have the right alarms.
Every organization needs alarms.
The challenge is to set up the ones that really matter. Ask yourself the following questions:
- What are your organization’s risks to sustainable success?
- What are the early warning signs?
- What signals can we produce when the early warning sign presents itself?
- Most importantly, what are we going to do when that signal occurs?
Alarms that induce action are essential for all organizations. Alarms that don’t are just noise.
Ignoring the importance of alarms and/or having the wrong alarms will result in your organization becoming reactive.
Establishing the right alarms and taking action before an emergency develops can mean the difference between being in the middle of the pack and being an industry leader.
Industry leader…..that sounds pretty good, doesn’t it?
