Change Is Inevitable. Are You Ready to Accept It?
Change…what does that little word mean to you? To Merriam-Webster, “change” conveys a few meanings:
- to become different
- to make (someone or something) different
- to become something else
Sounds simple enough, right? We know how to change. Here’s the proof:
If we didn’t, we would still be teaching in one-room schoolhouses, popping popcorn in a skillet over an open fire, and hitching our horses to the post outside of Starbucks…you get the idea.
Change Isn’t the Problem…Acceptance Is
Sometimes it’s not about whether or not to change – but how quickly we accept it in our lives. Let’s face it – for many of us, accepting change is tough.
Sure, most of us realize that perhaps the one constant in life is change itself. Accepting this, however, is another story.
As the late Stephen Covey once said, “There are three constants in life…change, choice and principles.” Change is completely normal – and absolutely crucial to your success.
Change the way you think…about change.
There’s that word again – change. The way you perceive change is likely to affect how you actually experience the process. If you approach the concept of change with a sense of dread or oppose it entirely, the results you get probably won’t be too favorable.
So, what do you do? Use these three simple steps to reframe how you experience change:
- See change from a fresh perspective by thinking about it as a new adventure.
- Use effective planning to determine not only how you’ll experience and accept change, but to outline the obstacles that may be interfering with your ability to welcome change.
- Once you’ve gone through the process of change, evaluate Ask yourself what was good, what was not so good, and how you’d do things differently next time to improve your experience.
Remember, what seems inevitable in the rear-view mirror doesn’t always look that way through the windshield.
