anything else – after Mike Tyson. After all, he bit a guy’s ear off and served time in prison for doing far worse. Yet, this quote reminds us that sometimes we should step back and evaluate how to move forward.

Let’s Face It…

Every once in a while we are dealt a situation that should cause us to look at elements of our plan and make an adjustment. How can we tell if an adjustment is necessary? An obvious sign is that the plan isn’t working! But sometimes it’s more subtle. So periodically (every six months), you should go back to your planning assumptions and see what has changed.

These assumptions may include guiding principles, elements of your SWOT, values, etc. Revisit the conditions upon which your plan was built. If they are no longer applicable, or you would make different decisions today based on them, then you should re-plan.

A Better Approach:

Here’s an approach that’s even better. Be proactive. When you build the plan in the first place, identify ahead of time the conditions that could emerge that would cause you to re-assess. That way, there’s little debate about whether you need to re-plan, and you can get right to the work.

Continuing to execute an irrelevant plan can be as detrimental as having no plan at all.
