“Our organization is in a state of change.”

That statement is probably true right now for you. And it will probably be true tomorrow, next month, and next year. Should we go so far as to say that a state of change is the new normal?

Times are different. The need for organizational agility directly conflicts with the tried-and-true traditional organizational structure, where jobs are painstakingly defined and everyone knows the hierarchy.

One negative effect of this high degree of definition is that an organization can be slow to adapt to a new need. Most organizations have an important need right now that is either going unaddressed or not being addressed adequately because of the binds of the structure.

New needs come and go, sometimes as quickly as a beautiful spring day. Traditional organization structures seem to stick around like a long, cold winter day. Another analogy – new needs are like LeBron James on a basketball court. And traditional organization structures are like me guarding him… always a step… or two… or three… behind.

Find a way to place a resource in the area of your new need. Think of it as being temporary – a trial of sorts. If after six months it pays dividends, then make it permanent. Or outsource it. But the bottom line is – you’ll never know until you try.

What’s Missing in Your Organization? “Our organization is in a state of change.” That statement is probably true right now for you.
