Why Can Does NOT Equal Should<\/h2>\n

Just because we can<\/em> do something doesn\u2019t mean we should<\/em> actually do it. Can<\/em> does not equal should<\/em>. These two words are very different, yet sometimes we don\u2019t distinguish them from each other.<\/p>\n

If you need an example, just watch one of the popular reality TV shows that involve singing competitions. The vocal skills of the contestants are simply amazing. But sometimes they focus more on showcasing<\/em> their vocal skills than on delivering<\/em> their best performance.<\/p>\n

The notes themselves are unbelievably impressive. But sometimes they don\u2019t have a purpose<\/em> within the performance, other than to say \u2018look at what I can do\u2019. The notes detract<\/em> from the performers\u2019 most important goal\u2026a fantastic overall performance. Just because they can<\/em> hit those notes doesn\u2019t mean they should<\/em>.<\/p>\n

The same thing happens in the workplace. We slip into a mode of doing what we can<\/em> do and not what should<\/em> be done. Sometimes it\u2019s easier. Sometimes it\u2019s more fun. Sometimes it\u2019s scary to learn how to do something we haven\u2019t done before. And sometimes, it\u2019s because we don\u2019t know how our role contributes to the organization\u2019s overall mission.<\/p>\n

Whatever the reason, choosing what we can<\/em> do over what we should<\/em> do is a recipe for mediocrity at best. While each of us should take individual accountability for how we spend our time, leaders have a unique responsibility in this area.<\/p>\n

Leaders have a responsibility to ensure that:<\/h3>\n

• The direction of the organization is well-defined and clearly understood.<\/li>\n
• The organization is aligned around the work that should<\/em> be done.<\/li>\n
• The skills needed to do the work well are present.<\/li>\n
• The environment is one where the right people want to be.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

  That\u2019s all that needs to be done. Piece of cake, right?<\/p>\n
