A Must-Read Book No Matter Who You Are (and it isn’t a business book!)
We all have a list of go-to books. We may even have a specific shelf that contains readings that resonate with us and just seem to provide the right guidance time and time again.
Your own bookshelves probably contain some of the same books as other peoples, but certainly some different ones as well. And I suspect that there’s no single book that sits on all of our shelves. That needs to change.
Being Mortal by Atul Gawande is a must-read for anyone who is close to someone approaching the end of his or her life, or who will one day face that circumstance personally (i.e. that’s everyone). The book focuses on whether we ask the right questions about our care. It is important material for all adults and perfect for the ‘sandwich’ generation.
A Bonus Business Lesson, Too
The book also helps us recognize that change sometimes happens around us in a way that causes us to hardly notice.
Progress happens gradually and subtly – and we often miss opportunities to pause and ask important questions.
- What if we chose to stray from the mob?
- What if we decided to no longer accept an imposed constraint?
- What if we jumped out in front and led an effort to affect the course of our industry?
Great questions, asked all too infrequently.
For an in-depth look at some important questions every organization should ask, be sure to check out this post.
I’ve read this. I seem to remember recommending it to you. Glad you found it helpful.
