The conversations we don’t have are the ones that cause damage. There are usually reasons to avoid these conversations:
- The topic is a sensitive one.
- We don’t want to lose flexibility by taking a stand.
- We don’t want to appear vulnerable.
- We might create conflict.
- We lack courage.
The list goes on and on…
Here’s the problem: Those are the most important conversations to have. If we don’t talk about the things that cause us to dig deep, to expose ourselves, and that bring different views to the surface, then others have to guess how we feel and what we believe.
And they will almost always guess wrong. And that’s far more damaging than having a difficult conversation.
