The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is now. This Chinese proverb reminds us that we should focus on the present and the future and not dwell in the past.
But does that mean that the past is unimportant? Certainly not.
Used unproductively (ignore it, twist it, cling to it), the past will not be helpful. Used productively (learn from it, honor it, talk about it), the past becomes a valuable tool. The past allows us to teach through relevant storytelling…a great method for communicating the values that are most important.
The past, the present, the future…All are important. But in really different ways.
