Leaders: Here’s Your Thanksgiving Challenge!
Happy Thanksgiving! What a great time to be thankful for your opportunities and to think about all the things you appreciate. As a leader, you have a responsibility to ensure that those around you feel appreciated.
If your skin is thicker than a turkey’s, I have a challenge for you that will help you learn how to lead more effectively. If you’re up for the challenge, read on…
Identify three people who work for you or work with you. Ask them the following questions:
- What does the organization do that makes you feel appreciated?
- What does the organization do that does not make you feel appreciated?
After you’ve broken the ice, ask the hard questions:
- What do I do that makes you feel appreciated?
- What do I do that does not make you feel appreciated?
Here’s the most challenging part: Your response is limited to a single word – ‘Thanks’.
That’s right – no justification, no rebuttal, and no indication of whether you agree or disagree. Just a sincere ‘Thanks’.
What you do with the responses you receive is up to you. Chances are, this sample of people reflects how others feel as well.
Asking the Tough Questions: Why it Matters
- Simply asking these questions – and responding with a sincere “thanks” – is a great way to show others appreciation.
- Though these questions sound pretty straightforward, the answers you receive can be quite enlightening and may open your eyes to things you weren’t aware of.
- What you do with the responses you receive – the action you take – can have a lasting, positive effect.
As this Thanksgiving comes and goes, enjoy the food, family, friends, and the privilege of being a leader!
